- [Info](https://musicstudy.eu/info/): Music & Emotions Information Statement Information for participants Dear Participant, This is a study being run by researchers at the University of Jyväskylä, in Finland. The responsible researcher for the project is Suvi Saarikallio, and the researchers responsible for this specific study are William Randall and Margarida Baltazar. We would like to ask you to participate in our study ”MUSICONNECT: Music and emotion regulation”, where we investigate how youth and young adults use music listening to regulate their emotions. In order to be able to process your personal data in this study, we need your permission and consent. In this document, we will inform you of several aspects of this study and will ask for your consent. If you are under 18 years old, we recommend that you let your parents or guardian know that you are participating in this research. This study will bring several positive benefits, since it will inform us of the role that music has on young people’s lives, on their well-being, and its psychological effects. We do not anticipate any negative effect. We invite you to participate because you are older than 13 years and listen to music in your everyday life on your Android or Apple smartphone. Voluntary participation and your rights as a research subject Participating in this study is completely voluntary. You can refuse to participate, withdraw your consent or cancel your participation in this study. You do not have to tell us why you do not want to participate. If you have any questions about your rights, please contact the university’s data protection officer tietosuoja@jyu.fi. Information about the study We invite you to take part in this study by using the MuPsych app during the next two weeks. If you want, you can use MuPsych longer (we will have access to those answers too). All data are collected through the app and you do not need to be in contact with the researchers. When you start, the app will guide you through the different questions. There are two types of tasks: music questions, which appear when you listen to music (this can be a few times per day), and surveys, which you only need to fill out once. Music questions are about how you feel and why you are listening to music. These questions will start through a notification, which is sent when you start listening to music on your phone. The app recognizes that music is playing and sends the notification. If you are not getting these questions, go to the “Help” menu to identify what might be the problem. When you listen to music, MuPsych also collects data on what music is playing (e.g. title, artist, album). If you login to Spotify through MuPsych, the app also collects some data about your musical taste (most listened to artists and songs). Surveys help us to describe you in a more general manner (e.g. how you usually feel, what kind of personality traits you have, your well-being, and emotional health). At the end of the study, the MuPsych app gives you feedback regarding your music listening (e.g. most common mood before music listening, situations when music listening was successful for reaching your goal). This is a single study. However, if you agree (through a survey in the app), you can be contacted for future studies. Protection of personal data In this study, we collect the following personal data: age, gender, education level, nationality, survey answers, and daily reports. MuPsych also collects data about the music playing at the time when you answer the daily questions (song’s title, artist, album). If you log in to Spotify in MuPsych, we also collect data regarding your music listening profile (most played artists and songs). If you give permission to future contact, we collect your email address. Email addresses are stored separately from the rest of the data. We process your data in a confidential and anonymous manner. Besides the researchers identified in this sheet, your data can be processed only by members of our research team. We have completed courses on data privacy and security at the University of Jyväskylä and follow the university’s guidelines. Your data will be processed only inside the European Union and will not be transferred outside the European Union. Data archiving Research data will be stored in a secure server in the same format as they were collected until the end of the project, around 2028. Some anonymous data may be kept beyond this time. Only members of the research team have access to the data. If you give us your permission, we will store your data for future studies and analyses in a fully anonymised format. At that time, other researchers may also use your data for their studies. Research results The results of this study will be published in scientific articles, so that the findings are available to the community. Overall results (with no information on individual participants) may also be used in presentations, during lectures, and shared with interested parties. Costs, rewards, funding of this study If you chose, you can take part in a monthly raffle to win a 12-month Spotify Premium subscription. You have the right to refuse the voucher. There are no costs associated with participating in this study. This research was funded by the European Research Council, European Union. Rights of research subjects You can contact us at any time about this study and your rights – before, during, and after the study. You have the right to know what kind of personal data we collect, and to ask for a copy of this data (however, we cannot give you all your data, since we cannot identify which are your answers amongst the other participants). You can cancel your participation at any time without needing to justify. You also have the right to file a complaint regarding the processing of your personal data. - [Prize Draw](https://musicstudy.eu/prize-draw/): MusiConnect “Music & Emotions” Prize Draw – Terms and Conditions 1. Promoter The prize draw is organised by the MusiConnect research team conducting the “Music & Emotions” study via the MuPsych mobile application. Contact: suvi.saarikallio@jyu.fi 2. Eligibility The prize draw is open to individuals who: Have completed at least 10 sets of Music Questions in the ‘Music & Emotions’ study prior to each draw date. Have completed at least the first 5 surveys in the ‘Music & Emotions’ study Have reached the digital age of consent in their country of residence (typically 16, or 13 where local law permits); and Have provided consent to participate in the prize draw by completing the ‘Prize draw/ study invite’ survey listed within the Music & Emotions study in the MuPsych app. 3. Prize Details One (1) winner will be selected each month for six (6) consecutive months, starting on 1 November 2025 and ending on 1 April 2026. Each monthly winner will receive one (1) digital voucher redeemable for six (6) months of Spotify Premium (subject to availability in their country and Spotify’s own terms). The prize is non-transferable and there is no cash alternative. The prize will be delivered as a digital code via the MuPsych app. 4. Draw Process Eligible participants who complete 10 sets of Music Questions and 5 surveys in the ‘Music & Emotions’ study, and consent via the ‘Prize draw/ study invite’ survey will be automatically entered into all following draws. Each draw will take place on or shortly after the 1st calendar day of each month. Winners will be selected at random using a computer-based randomisation process from all eligible entries received before the monthly cutoff. 5. Notification and Prize Delivery Winners will be notified within 7 days of each draw via their provided email address. Winners may be required to provide certain information (e.g. country of residence, proof of age, or tax identification number) in accordance with applicable laws in order to claim their prize. If the required information is not provided within 14 days of notification, the Promoter reserves the right to withdraw the prize and select an alternate winner. 6. Data Protection Participation in the prize draw is conditional upon provision of consent in the ‘Prize draw/ study invite’ survey. Personal data will be processed in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and relevant national legislation. Only the minimum necessary data will be collected and used solely for the purpose of verifying eligibility and delivering the prize. Data will not be shared with third parties unless required by law. For more information, see the MuPsych privacy policy. 7. General Conditions The Promoter reserves the right to disqualify entries that do not comply with these terms or that are suspected of fraud or abuse. The Promoter reserves the right to substitute the prize with another of equal or greater value in the event of circumstances beyond its control. The Promoter is not responsible for technical issues, app malfunctions, or failures beyond its control that may prevent entry or delivery of the prize. The Promoter reserves the right to amend or cancel the prize draw or these terms at any time, but will make reasonable efforts to notify participants in the event of any significant changes. Spotify is not affiliated with or a sponsor of this prize draw. Meeting the eligibility requirements will enter participants into all subsequent prize draws, but draw winners will be removed from subsequent prize draws (so that it is not possible to win more than one draw). 8. Governing Law These terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the country in which the Promoter is based (Finland), and any disputes shall be subject to the jurisdiction of the local courts.
