Dear Participant,
This is a study being run by researchers at the University of Jyväskylä, in Finland. The responsible researcher for the project is Suvi Saarikallio, and the researchers responsible for this specific study are William Randall and Margarida Baltazar.
We would like to ask you to participate in our study ”MUSICONNECT: Music and emotion regulation”, where we investigate how youth and young adults use music listening to regulate their emotions.
In order to be able to process your personal data in this study, we need your permission and consent. In this document, we will inform you of several aspects of this study and will ask for your consent.
If you are under 18 years old, we recommend that you let your parents or guardian know that you are participating in this research. This study will bring several positive benefits, since it will inform us of the role that music has on young people’s lives, on their well-being, and its psychological effects. We do not anticipate any negative effect.
We invite you to participate because you are older than 13 years and listen to music in your everyday life on your Android or Apple smartphone.
Participating in this study is completely voluntary. You can refuse to participate, withdraw your consent or cancel your participation in this study. You do not have to tell us why you do not want to participate. If you have any questions about your rights, please contact the university’s data protection officer tietosuoja@jyu.fi.
We invite you to take part in this study by using the MuPsych app during the next two weeks. If you want, you can use MuPsych longer (we will have access to those answers too). All data are collected through the app and you do not need to be in contact with the researchers.
When you start, the app will guide you through the different questions.
There are two types of tasks: music questions, which appear when you listen to music (this can be a few times per day), and surveys, which you only need to fill out once.
Music questions are about how you feel and why you are listening to music. These questions will start through a notification, which is sent when you start listening to music on your phone. The app recognizes that music is playing and sends the notification. If you are not getting these questions, go to the “Help” menu to identify what might be the problem. When you listen to music, MuPsych also collects data on what music is playing (e.g. title, artist, album). If you login to Spotify through MuPsych, the app also collects some data about your musical taste (most listened to artists and songs).
Surveys help us to describe you in a more general manner (e.g. how you usually feel, what kind of personality traits you have, your well-being, and emotional health).
At the end of the study, the MuPsych app gives you feedback regarding your music listening (e.g. most common mood before music listening, situations when music listening was successful for reaching your goal).
This is a single study. However, if you agree (through a survey in the app), you can be contacted for future studies.
In this study, we collect the following personal data: age, gender, education level, nationality, survey answers, and daily reports. MuPsych also collects data about the music playing at the time when you answer the daily questions (song’s title, artist, album). If you log in to Spotify in MuPsych, we also collect data regarding your music listening profile (most played artists and songs). If you give permission to future contact, we collect your email address. Email addresses are stored separately from the rest of the data.
We process your data in a confidential and anonymous manner. Besides the researchers identified in this sheet, your data can be processed only by members of our research team.
We have completed courses on data privacy and security at the University of Jyväskylä and follow the university’s guidelines.
Your data will be processed only inside the European Union and will not be transferred outside the European Union.
Research data will be stored in a secure server in the same format as they were collected until the end of the project, around 2028. Some anonymous data may be kept beyond this time. Only members of the research team have access to the data. If you give us your permission, we will store your data for future studies and analyses in a fully anonymised format. At that time, other researchers may also use your data for their studies.
The results of this study will be published in scientific articles, so that the findings are available to the community. Overall results (with no information on individual participants) may also be used in presentations, during lectures, and shared with interested parties.
If you chose, you can take part in a monthly raffle to win a 6-month Spotify Premium subscription.
You have the right to refuse the voucher.
There are no costs associated with participating in this study.
This research was funded by the European Research Council, European Union.
You can contact us at any time about this study and your rights – before, during, and after the study. You have the right to know what kind of personal data we collect, and to ask for a copy of this data (however, we cannot give you all your data, since we cannot identify which are your answers amongst the other participants). You can cancel your participation at any time without needing to justify. You also have the right to file a complaint regarding the processing of your personal data.
Please read the following statement in full before taking part in this study.
Upon reading and understanding the information below, if you want to participate in this research, press ‘I Agree’.
NOTE:
This app collects data for scientific research purposes only
Your data won’t be sold, or used to show you ads
We ask you to participate in ‘MuPsych: Modelling the Emotional Outcomes of Personal Music Listening’, which investigates how listening to music on mobile phones influences emotional states. We want to find out how listening to music changes your emotions, and how this is impacted by other things such as: what you are doing while listening, your reasons for listening, and your personality.
You are invited to the study because you listen to music on a mobile phone, and are over 13 years of age.
This research notification describes the study and related participation. The attachment provides information on the processing of your personal data.
The study will involve thousands of participants from all over the world, including all ages (above 13), genders, and backgrounds.
This study includes a follow-up study, if you would like to see how your listening habits change over time. In the ‘Follow-up study’ survey (in the surveys menu), you can choose to be contacted later for the next part.
Participation in this study is voluntary. You can refuse to participate in the study, stop participating or cancel your previously given consent, without stating any reason for this and at any time during the study. This will have no negative consequences to you.
If you stop participating in the study or if you cancel your consent, the personal data, samples and other information collected on you up to that point will be used as part of the research material as far as it is necessary in order to ensure relevant research outcomes.
We request that you take part in this study for 2 weeks, although you have the option to pause or end this at any time in the settings menu. During this time, you will be asked to complete music questions at multiple times when you are listening to music. These should take around 2 minutes each to complete, and you are asked to complete around 20 of these over the 2 week period. In addition to music questions, there is also a list of surveys, which you only need to complete once. These should take 20-30 minutes to complete in total. In addition to the responses you provide to music questions and surveys, the MuPsych app will collect some data about your listening experiences automatically. Each of these are collected with a specific purpose related to your music listening. Later, when enough participants have taken part in our study, you will be able to use a personal music recommender in the MuPsych app, which will play music based on your current mood, activity, and reason for listening. Details on Music questions, surveys, and additional data collection, and the music recommender are given below.
These are questions that you answer while listening to music.
When you start playing music in any music app you already use (such as Spotify), you will receive a notification to start ‘Music Questions 1’. When you open this, you will be given a short series of questions about how you feel and your reasons for listening.
If you are still listening to music 5 minutes after you complete ‘Music Questions 1’, you will receive a notification for ‘Music Questions 2’. When you open this, you will answer some more questions on how you feel, the music you are listening to, and your listening context (including what you are doing while listening).
If you are still listening to music 15 minutes after you complete ‘Music Questions 2’, you will receive a notification for ‘Music Questions 3’. When you open this, you will answer some more questions on how you feel, and the music you are listening to.
Music questions are mostly made up of option lists, sliders, and buttons. They also include optional questions where you can type in an answer.
When you complete ‘Music Questions 2’, you will not be shown any more music questions for a period of time (usually 3 hours). If you receive too many music questions, you can set this time yourself in the settings menu.
These are longer questionnaires with multiple questions that you only need to answer once (they are not linked to a specific listening experience)
The surveys include questions about your Basic details, Personality, Music Taste, Well-being, Emotions, and Music Listening.
Some surveys are available immediately, and some will be unlocked after 2 days. Once unlocked, you can complete the surveys at any time.
In the ‘Follow-up study’ survey, you will be given the option to take part in the next part of the study, 6 months after you complete this part. If you would like to take part, and you are old enough (based on which country you live in), you will be able to provide your email address. This will be stored separately to your other data, and will be deleted once the follow-up emails have been sent.
Song/ track title and Artist of the music playing during music questions: this is so we can analyse the features of the music, and relate these to your listening experience
Additional information about your listening profile (such as your liked tracks and artists): this is only accessed if you log into your music streaming service (such as Spotify), which is requested by some studies. Consent for this will be asked from the music player (e.g. Spotify) when you select your music players in MuPsych, and giving this is completely optional.
Physiological measures from your smartwatch or wearable device (heart rate (including resting heart rate and heart rate variability), respiratory rate, body temperature, galvanic skin response, and oxygen saturation): these will be collected during music questions (only if you give permission), to see if they relate to self-reported changes in your emotional states.
Approximate location: this may be accessed during music questions (only if you give permission), to get information on current weather conditions during music episodes. The location data will not leave your phone or be seen by anyone.
Each of these additional data types will always be processed confidentially, and will not be linked to your identity.
To use the recommender (when it becomes available), you will need to provide your emotion state, activity and reason for listening (by answering the same questions you see in regular music questions). Once these are provided, the recommender will start playing music which is personalised to you, and your situation.
After 5 minutes of listening to this music, you will be asked for some feedback on how your emotional states have changed, the suitability for your activity, and success for your listening reason. These are all questions that you will be familiar with from the music questions.
There are several potential benefits for taking part in this research. You can receive rewards and feedback within the app, including a listening diary, and charts/ overviews of your music listening behaviours. Later – when enough participants have taken part in our study – unique listener profiles, feedback on listening styles, and a personalised music recommender system will also be made available in the app.
There is a slight risk of minor emotional distress from some of the items included within the surveys, however precautions have been taken to minimise these risks. There is no physical interaction between participants and researchers, and there is no risk of physical harm. If using MuPsych causes you distress or any kind of emotional harm, please end your participation and uninstall the app.
No rewards will be paid for participation in the standard studies. However, there may be rewards for the different studies also presented through the app.
Participation in the research will not result in costs to you. The research project is currently funded by the Research Council of Finland (Centre of Excellence in Music, Mind, Body and Brain; CoEMMBB, until 2029); and the European Research Council (consolidator grant for ‘MUSICONNECT’ project, until 2027).
The data collected will be used for a series of studies, to be submitted for publication in various international journals. Results will also be shown in seminar and conference presentations. Practical applications will include the curation of music playlists using the algorithm derived from the model of personal music listening. Feedback on personal listening style and behaviour will be given to participants, and the results of the research will be provided upon request.
When the results of the research are published, no information will be included that would reveal your identity.
As no part of this study requires participants to travel to, or be present at, the University of Jyväskylä, medical and liability insurance is not applicable. If participants wish to see the register specification of the study, they are entitled to do so upon request.

Scientific research serving a public interest (GDPR, Article 6.1e, special personal data categories 9.2j).
In this research, your personal data will not be transferred outside the EU/EEA area.
Processing of personal data in this research is based on an appropriate research plan and the study has a designated person in charge. The personal data collected and saved for this research will include only such data that is necessary for the research purpose.
Preventing identification
As a protective measure, any direct identification data will be removed upon the compilation of the data set (pseudonymised data allowing restored identification using codes or equivalent information, and also new data connected to the data set). Email addresses which identify participants will be deleted as soon as the emails inviting participants to the follow-up study have been sent. This will happen approximately 6 months after the first part of the study has been completed. After the email addresses have been deleted, data becomes anonymous. This means that all identification data are fully removed so that there will be no return to the identifiable personal data, nor any new data can be connected to this data set.
The personal data processed in this research will be protected using: user ID and password encryption.
For this study, a separate data protection impact assessment has been made.
The researchers have completed data protection and information security training.
Agreements have been made with research assistants and/or processors of personal data /Joint Data Controllers.
The research register will be anonymised in an ongoing process (as email addresses are deleted), so that all data will be anonymous by the end of the study in December 2029. This means that all identification data are fully removed so that there will be no return to the identifiable personal data, nor any new data can be connected to this data set.
Right to access your personal data (GDPR, Article 15)
You have the right to get to know whether and which personal data of yours are processed. If you wish, you can also request a copy of your personal data to be processed.
Right to rectification (GDPR, Article 16)
If there are any inaccuracies or errors in your personal data to be processed, you are entitled to request that these be rectified or supplemented.
